For Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, we’re partnering with Wipe Out Kids Cancer to highlight some incredible Flops Fighting Cancer Warriors. We’re kicking this series off with 14-year-old, Jaxon Starling.
When Jaxon was 12-years-old, he was diagnosed with Stage 4 Osteosarcoma. Although this diagnosis threw the Starling family for an unexpected turn, they never lost hope in his ability to overcome the challenge.
But, Jaxon is more than his diagnosis. Jaxon is a freshman in high school who is obsessed with digital animation, loves reading, and spending time with his family!
Here are a few more fun facts about Jax:
Favorite movie: Over the Hedge.
Favorite sport: Golf, so catch him on the greens.
Hobbies: reading and playing video games.
Favorite sibling: his eldest brother who just enlisted in the air force.
How does he find joy?: building up others helps him forget about his own battles.
Jaxon is currently still in the fight against cancer, and yet he does not allow this or anything else to waver his smile and joyful spirit.
Jaxon, you are an inspiration to us all and the true definition of a warrior. We can’t wait to see you change the world some day.

]]>A ‘Flop Drop’ is a very special day within Hari Mari that comes a handful of times a year. It’s a day our team members look forward to with enthusiasm and pride because it’s a day of service to others, where we put our flip flops on folks’ feet to hopefully generate a few smiles & laughs.
Sometimes those smiles & laughs come from young cancer patients we visit at one of our Flops Fighting Cancer partner hospitals. Sometimes the smiles & laughs come from heroic veterans and first responder amputees we supply prosthetic-friendly flops to through Hari Mari’s Freedom Flops program. And, sometimes they come from an altogether different type of Flop Drop. This year, we took it to Guatemala – a country that’s special to our Founders hearts because Lila & Jeremy got married there nearly fifteen years ago.
Enter, Serve Hope and the awe-inspiring residents of San Andrés Itzapa.
Serve Hope, a US-based organization with roots in Honduras and Guatemala, started 10 years ago with the charge of selling coffee through its Serve Hope community coffee shops to fund clean water programs in foreign communities with little to no access to safe drinking water. One such community rests in the rural hillside town of San Andrés Itzapa, on the outskirts of Antigua, Guatemala.
Opened for just a few short months, Serve Hope’s newest coffee shop located in Antigua helps to finance the clean water activities and costs for Itzapa and dozens of surrounding towns just like it by providing families with at-home filtration kits to help provide clean, potable water for thousands of families struggling for viable solutions to this important obstacle so crucial to daily life.
Visiting our friends at Serve Hope Guatemala this past spring, Hari Mari had the distinct privilege & honor of tagging along with the organization’s most recent clean water event in San Andrés Itzapa and also host its latest Flop Drop. Itzapa’s proud residents aren’t in need of flip flops or footwear like they need access to clean water, but our latest flop drop did elicit a lot of smiles & laughs, and for playing small part in that, we thank Serve Hope and the good people of San Andrés Itzapa."

We thought we’d take this opportunity to tell you more about what it means for Hari Mari to go green, and how we managed to create our most sustainable flip-flop that is completely Eco-friendly.
First on the list: find a fabric that relatively matches the leather feeling we’re known and loved for. That’s where cactus leather came into the picture. The innovative cactus leather is the world's first highly sustainable and environmentally friendly organic material made of Nopal cactus, also known as the prickly pear. Cactus is a natural carbon sink and has a great CO2 sequestering capacity. The leather only utilizes the mature leaves of the plant without damaging the plant itself, enabling repeat harvest every 6-8 months from the same plants. Often distinguished by it’s great softness, performance, and sustainability, we knew we found a winner.
Finally, we wanted the entire flip-flop to be Eco-friendly, not just pieces of it. For the bottom sole, we’re using recycled rubber that comes from old shoe and sneaker soles - this is actually visible on the shoe itself, which means that no two soles are the same (pretty cool)! And the padding that makes the flop itself? That’s recycled & repurposed EVA. EVA is a foam derived from petrol-chemicals, so repurposing means we are not depleting more natural resources BUT you’re still getting the comfort you desire and expect from your Hari Mari flip-flop.
The Sonoros proves that comfort and performance do not have to be sacrificed in order to be Eco-friendly. And now that we know that, this line is just the beginning of something much more meaningful for Hari Mari.
Shop the SonorosHM: Being a travel blogger sounds like an epic career, but what drove you to actually quit corporate America and take the leap?
JA: I hope to inspire the wanderlust in everyone, showing you how you can both find adventure locally and explore the world internationally, even with a full time job!
I used to work a 9-5 job just like the majority of you out there. But I did everything in my power to not let that affect my desire to travel. In fact, it fueled it! You can bet that I used every single vacation day I had!
So don’t be discouraged by job limitations. You can see still the world!
I also try to write about what it’s like being a full-time travel blogger in case this is a path you want to pursue!
HM: As a travel enthusiast, where do you feel is a must see? Tell us about it. Also, where is over-hyped?
JA: From my travels, the places I think are absolutely must-see places are Alaska, Hawaii, Iceland, and Yellowstone National Park.
Over-hyped places: that's a hard one! I don't think I've been anywhere that has felt over-hyped! That being said, we've been avoiding the "super popular Instagram spots" like Bali and Mykonos, but I'd still love to see them someday!
HM: How do you encourage yourself to go exploring everyday? What are some examples of "everyday exploring" to you? Whether you're on vacay or in Dallas :)
JA: As a photographer, I've learned to appreciate the beauty in everyday moments. Whether we're out exploring somewhere new or are at home in Dallas, I think photography has given me a new perspective on what it means to explore- whether we're traveling or not! We're always looking for beautiful places wherever we go, which encourages us to have that "everyday exploring" mentality!
HM: What's an ideal outfit with your slides? slippers? Where will these outfits take you?
JA: My Sydney Slides go with everything and I wore them basically every day last summer! They're absolutely a staple when it's warm out! I've traveled to Montana, Wyoming, Hawaii, North Carolina, South Carolina, Saint Lucia, and of course, Texas, in my slides. My favorite thing to pair them with is dresses!
Slippers take on a different vibe- they're my cozy winter go-to. I most often wear them with leggings, PowderFleece and more casual outfits.
HM: What are bucket list spots you want to travel to?
JA: I'd love to go on safari in the Serengeti, do a Europe road trip, visit Greenland, and explore New Zealand. And though we have seen the northern lights in Alaska, I really would love to experience them in Lapland someday!

]]>Hari Mari flip flops have touched virtually every corner of the world thanks to adventure addicts like Clay. One pair - of the many he owns - has been to 43 states and 13 countries so far. The travel bug bit him on his first job assisting a travel photographer decades ago and he knew that was what he wanted to do in life. He doesn’t only bring his flip flops and camera with him on his travels, he is known to bring along a canine companion.
20 years ago, between travels, Clay found some puppies in a dumpster and something unlocked in his heart. He adopted them and started a lifelong mission with the rescue world. He began fostering, volunteering and helping wherever he could. Neighbors caught word and would dump dogs into his backyard because they knew he’d rescue them. Some of his dogs were fit and eager to travel alongside Clay. His most recent soulmate, Tuco, hiked over 500 miles with Clay all over Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Ohio. During Tuco’s downtime. He was a supermodel…no joke, check him out on the news. He lost Tuco recently and the hole in Clay’s heart will never fully recover. Between trips, Clay spends as much time as he can volunteering at The Love Pit. Tuco will be forever honored on Clay’s hikes all over the world.
On a trip with some human buddies, Clay rented out an AirBnB in Thailand. The spot was endearingly dodgy. While they were out taking photos of and exploring temples, a pipe burst. They came home to a full blown flood with all of their luggage and equipment ruined…aside from their Hari Maris which passed the float test. The beds, rugs, clothes were all submerged and the top of the flood was speckled with colorful Hari Mari Dunes floating which made it out perfectly unscathed.
What’s next on Clay’s agenda? He plans to travel at least once per month and the next spots will be San Diego, Chicago and Finland to watch the Northern Lights in a glass igloo. He’s bringing his CanyonTrek II’s with!
The team at Hari Mari appreciates Clay’s thirst for #everydayexploring and his desire to rescue animals. Think you’ve got what it takes to be a Hari Mari Everyday Explorer? Apply here!

After a drastic career pivot from fashion to healthcare, she packed up her life, moved into a '99 airstream and took a contract as a travel nurse. She and her soulmate have traveled from coast to coast exploring nature and new cities. Katlyn made a choice to live an adventure-filled life and her Hari Mari flops are a staple for all of her travels.
When chatting with Katlyn, she brought up her favorite quote from a Lord Huron song, "What good is livin' a life you've been given if all you do is stand in one place?" In 2019, she and her husband took this to heart. They ended the lease on their home, put a few treasured belongings in storage, and bought a 1999 Airstream. Over the next year, they renovated it and made all the necessary upgrades to get their tiny home-on-wheels ready for the road.
Now, as a travel ICU nurse, she gets 13-week contracts in cities all over the United States. Her husband is a photographer and can easily work remotely. This allows them to bike, camp, hike, kayak, try amazing food & drink, meet awesome people, and explore so many unique places. Their airstream has taken them to Arizona, North Carolina, Tennessee, California, Arkansas, Colorado and more. Katlyn mentioned, "We never leave home without our Hari Maris!"
The team here at Hari Mari appreciates Katlyn's thirst for #everydayexploring and her desire to help others as a nurse.

MARI / Latin for 'of the sea'
For the HARI side of his life, Daniel's a pro baseball pitcher. As of this year, Norris plays for the Milwaukee Brewers. He previously pitched in MLB for the Toronto Blue Jays and Detroit Tigers. Fun fact, Daniel is one of few players in MLB history to hit a home run on their first career at bat. He came out swingin'.
As for Daniel's MARI side, he has been know to live in his Volkswagen van, known as shaggynorris on Instagram, to travel the California coast in search of the Pacific's best swells to surf. Norris did not grow up near the ocean, he grew up in Johnson City, TN where his family has owned a bicycle shop for more than 80 years. Drawn to the outdoors, he picked up surfing when he was old enough to travel solo. Surfing is more than just fun for Norris; it helps him stay in shape and gets his mind in a calm headspace. He's surfed notorious waves along the Atlantic, California, Japan, Costa Rica, Nicaragua and more.
Hari Mari is honored to have such an adventurous fan of the brand like Daniel Norris. He has sported our products for years and we will be forever grateful. We couldn't find a better fit of an individual who lives Hari Mari's #everydayexploring in all that he does.

]]>Sip that tangy margarita and slip into your favorite sandals while our local Tulum friends take you through an authentic visit of their beloved city.
]]>After realizing our suitcases had collected their fareshare of dust, we decided it was time to head out on more than just a neighborhood walk. We packed our bags with warm-weather essentials and headed just a couple hundred miles south, to our friends in Tulum, Mexico.
No, we didn’t look to Instagram to guide our trip, but rather the locals who’ve enjoyed this lush, restorative oasis for decades. Tucked within the Yucatan Peninsula, we roamed the tropical jungle terrain and historic beaches. When we weren’t snorkeling through a glassy cenote or outrunning a warm rain shower, biking to a street-side market or grounding ourselves with an invigorating yoga flow, we were conjuring ways to cancel our flights home.
Sip that tangy margarita and slip into your favorite sandals while our local Tulum friends take you through an authentic visit of their beloved city.
For some beachcombing fuel or a midday pick-me-up, stop into a local produce market along the bustling streets of Tulum. You can’t go wrong with any of the fresh picks, though we consistently reached for the ripe avocados, apples, and oranges (Or should we say, palta, manzana, y plátano)!
A trip to Mexico cannot be complete without eating some authentic street tacos! Our favorite was Taqueria Honorio, found in the downtown Tulum district. Pro tip – they close everyday at 3 pm (or when they run out of meat!), so make sure to get your order in for an earlier lunch, before they close for the day!
The best way to explore bustling Tulum ... peddling down the jungle-lined streets! Taxi traffic can be a bit overwhelming, so bikes are definitely the way to go. Rentals can typically be arranged through your hotel, or at one of the many rental-shops around town. You won’t need to walk far to find some wheels. The rate is about 150 pesos per day, or less if you rent it for your entire stay!
Tulum is certainly known for these stunning caverns filled with crystal-clear water and colorful wildlife, but most are overwhelmed with hoards of tourists. These collapsed limestone havens are far more enjoyable when visited in small groups, so we recommend paying up for a private tour! We met up with Dimas, a cenote guide by day, bartender-extraordinaire by night, who took us to “Cenote Minotauro.” We enjoyed every second of our private adventure, even with the quick downpour we encountered!
One of the most unique aspects of Tulum is the extravagant art tucked in the trees. Unique sculptures of driftwood, scrap metal, recycled trash and hand-woven cloth turn this jungle oasis into an adult playground. If you’d like your reality flipped on its head, look no further than the famed hotel Azulik. Their winding and wandering paths are truly otherworldly and instantly transport you into a luxurious state of utter relaxation.
Not only is Tulum a picturesque vacation spot, but it calls forth soul-searchers and yogis alike. The whole city lures the senses and soothes the soul with events and experiences geared around healing, spirituality and gratitude. The hotel staff greeted our team with a traditional singing bowl and burning incense, to help cleanse our minds and ground our souls. While our team’s abilities maxed out with ‘happy baby’ pose, we certainly took advantage of the open air studios, like true locals.
If you are a fishing enthusiast, you know this side of the Yucatan peninsula as home to world-class fishing spots. Our cenote guide, Dimas, swears by and frequents Punta Alen. This local-favorite is about a 2 hour drive from Tulum, rarely visited by tourists, and a must-visit for an authentic Tulum experience! However, if you are looking to stay close to Tulum, there are many companies that offer day charters to Punta Piedra and other, more trafficked spots try your luck at a catch.
A day in Tulum is not complete without a flavorful dinner, topped off with tequila (lots of tequila), and dancing the night away. To start the evening, head to Posada Margherita for dinner. If you are all taco’d out, you can’t go wrong with any of their authentic italian cuisine (they haven’t changed their menu in 20 years!) and amazing wine selection. You certainly won’t hear us complaining about the ocean-front view, either! After dinner, head to Bar Batey where you can sip on a fresh cane mojito and move to live music. Or, if you still can’t get enough tequila, pop into Gitano Tulum for a mezcal tasting and a rich history lesson about the area’s crown jewel: mezcal.

Guest blog by Randall Thompson, President & Founder of Dugout Mugs
Fear keeps us from achieving our dreams. A cousin of fear is the excuse. We, sometimes, infuse excuses into our decision making process to rationalize why we can’t pursue and achieve our vision. I was guilty of this in my early 20’s - I put my focus on limitations rather than focus on necessary actions for what I wanted to achieve.
The pendulum always swings. My belief, there is a natural balance to our lives. So, after years of excuses, I started taking action, and said to myself:
“Can I get Dugout Mugs off the ground, and do my first $1 million in sales in flip flops?”
The short answer is “yes;” however, I ended up generating far more than $1 million in flip flops...both in money and in faith.
There seems to be a shift in the way business is being done, and strangely - authenticity is the best tool for monetization in 2021. I say “strangely,” because - it seems like being yourself would have always been the best way to facilitate business.
When it comes to defining business casual, I am unsure who even defined the standard in business attire to begin with. So, following the rules of an unknown source is never the formula to success. However, being yourself is a formula you can put faith in.
If you feel like “you” in a suit - wear it. If it’s flops - wear ‘em. A tuxedo t-shirt - do it - just make sure it’s authentically you. Ultimately, it’s not about you redefining business casual - it’s about becoming clear on defining you.

Whether you’re working from home, exploring your local nature park, or headed to happy hour, these new boots and runners will comfortably take you there & back, and then some!
Here's what we're really excited about:
We’ve elevated the Adobe Desert Boot and the CanyonTrek Chukka…
New for 2020, León Waxed Suede Leather.
As you’ve come to expect, these Hari Mari boots are made with quality leather, but no boot is worth its heel without top-notch construction. That’s why the Waxed Adobe Desert and Waxed CanyonTrek™ Chukka boots are manufactured in the leather shoe capital of the world, León, Mexico. The who’s who of boots are all made in this central Mexican state of Guanajuato. From the toe cap to the leather welt, you won’t find better construction, quality, and style. And, did we mention the out-out-of the box comfort?!
This is our first waxed suede boot... and we’re hooked! The wax creates a seal for the leather making it water-resistant and ready to handle the elements your weatherman forgot to predict. And, over time, this boot will develop a unique patina of depth & character, and longevity to match. We like to say this boot will wear in, but it will never wear out!
Add in all-day comfort & support with the molded memory foam insert, along with premium pig leather lining for a soft-to-the-touch interior, and non-marking rubber outsoles, and you’ve got a go-to boot you’ll never want to take off!
New for 2020, Dos Santos LX with Bamboo Performance Lining
The Dos Santos LX Retro Runner is a premium take on your all-day trainer. Pair with your favorite denim or 5-pocket pant as you hop from zoom meeting to happy hour in top-notch full-grain leather. The Hari Mari comfort you’ve come to know and love is present through the memory foam-lined tongue and ankle collar, and the molded foam footbed. Keep your feet cool & dry with an antimicrobial, anti-fungal bamboo performance liner, perfect for all adventures - from the mundane to the mind-blowing!

]]>A dog's healing presence is known to have a positive influence on wellness. That's the driving force behind Sit...Stay...PLAY, the facility dog program at Cook Children's. Cook Children's Hospital in Fort Worth has professionally trained dogs on staff through a partnership with Canine Assistants, a service dog agency in Georgia. A team of Cook Children's employees has been trained as the dogs' handlers, and each day the dogs come to work to serve as part of our therapeutic environment.
As a committed partner, Hari Mari donates 1% of all sales to support kids battling cancer, helping to pay for medicine, treatment & hospital costs. We call it, "Flops Fighting Cancer." September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month and we've asked our incredible partners at Cook Children's a few questions to learn more about the Pediatric Cancer and the amazing work they do to help these brave children. Here is some insight from Kat, A Child Life Specialist who handles one of the Sit...Stay...Play facility dogs, named Chanel.
Hari Mari : "What inspired you to focus on children in your medical career?"
Kat : "I always joke that I didn’t choose my career, rather my career chose me. I always wanted to be a teacher, until I got to college and decided I wanted to be a physician. My sister was an oncology nurse at the children’s hospital and talked me into volunteering in the brand new “playroom.” During that time, I realized that being a physician was the wrong side of the equation for me. I loved the work I did comforting, playing, calming, etc. which is a huge part of being a Child Life specialist. I just never left. "
Hari Mari : "Is there a cancer that seems to be more prevalent than others in children? "
Kat : "I would say that leukemia is the most prevalent diagnosis that we see. It’s reported that over 10,000 children a year are diagnosed. Other diagnoses that we frequently see are lymphoma, neuroblastoma, Wilm’s tumor and other solid tumors."
Hari Mari : "Say I have a friend or family member experiencing pediatric cancer, what is the best way I can support both the whole family and the child?"
Kat: "There are so many ways that people can help. Being present, and not just at the beginning of a diagnosis, is one way. That may not mean being physically at the hospital (especially now, in the age of COVID-19) but sending texts or calling just to say that they are thinking about the family. Offering specific types of support can be helpful: “Let me take care of your dog while you are at the hospital.” “I grabbed a bag of necessary items like toilet paper and paper towels for you all and left them on your porch.” Being aware of and available to siblings can also be very helpful. Gifts are always appreciated, but some children receive many stuffed animals at the time of their diagnosis so things like gift cards to a food delivery service or age-appropriate craft kits may be more helpful."
Hari Mari : "What does Cook Children’s do differently to create a more fun experience for kids with cancer?"
Kat : "We are very blessed with our resources here at Cook Children’s, which would not be possible without donations. We have many ways to engage kids and teens in age-appropriate fun, even now. We have toys and activities that they can play with in their rooms. Outside of COVID-19, we have playrooms and other activity areas. We have a lot of community partners who help us with things like making first run Disney movies available at the hospital, or providing special visits from celebrities like Bumblebee, the Transformer. Our Child Life Zone TV programming has really kept things lively during the pandemic, offering daily game shows, crafts and other activities for kids. We also have a strong therapeutic camping program that has transitioned this year to “Backyard Editions” so the fun continued even when kids couldn’t physically be at camp. We have great ancillary programming through things like music therapy, our artist in residence (CARPE) program, and our therapeutic clown program. And how could I forget—we have dogs! Our facility dog, Chanel, is part of the staff on the Oncology unit."
Hari Mari : "Can you tell us about the facility dogs?"
Kat : "We have a program that includes 6 facility dogs. They are trained service dogs and are placed with us after almost two years of training with Canine Assistants in Georgia. Chanel is our oldest dog. We’ve been a team since January of 2014. The dogs are assigned to areas based on their handler’s role. Chanel worked with me in neurology for several years and has now worked with me in Hematology/Oncology for about a year and a half. Her role here is extremely therapeutic. We know why it works and can definitely talk about increased endorphins, lower heart rate, etc., but I feel like some of the magic is unexplainable. For example, a child who tells us they don’t need a premed because they feel “braver when the dog is here.” Or a teen at the end of life who is not very responsive but begins to pet the dog when she lays with them on the bed."
Hari Mari : "How can people get involved to help the fight against childhood cancer?"
Kat : "There are several ways people can help. Financial donations and in-kind donations are always welcome. I’d encourage you to check with the staff about the needs when considering an in-kind donation."
Hari Mari : "Anything you’d like to add about the fight against childhood cancer, Cook Children’s, or your experience helping pediatric cancer patients?"
Kat : "I’d just like to say thank you for all the amazing support that Hari Mari provides to our health care system! I feel very blessed to work with this group of kids. They are amazing role models in resilience."

As the 3rd most visited Archeological Site in México after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza, Tulum is a very trendy place to visit….and for good reason!
]]>As the 3rd most visited Archeological Site in México after Teotihuacan and Chichen Itza, Tulum is a very trendy place to visit….and for good reason! Located in Quintana Roo, the state that’s also home to Cancun, Cozumel, and Isla Mujeres, Tulum can be accessed by flying to Cancun. The drive to Tulum is then about an hour and a half, but can be easy as most hotels offer a shuttle service for a flat rate and may include water and beer during the ride.
A few Hari Mari Everyday Explorers, Clay, Summer, and Zach, have recently visited Tulum, so we have some insider info for you to start booking your Tulum trip!
There are many options for hotels in Tulum. Our explorers stayed at Ma’xanab. The staff was friendly, accommodating, and hospitable. They also offered complimentary in-room breakfast every morning with bookings through hotels.com. One tip during your hotel search is to check to see if the hotel staff clears the hotel beach of seaweed daily. The beaches of Tulum battle Sargassum build up in the Summer months and that can definitely affect your beach day! This also means that a pool needs to be on your hotel must-have list.
As far as food goes, our crew says their best meal was at Parole. The Gorgonzola Gnocchi is “to die for.” The service was great, ambience eclectic and romantic. Other options to check out are Negra, Kitchen Table, and Taboo.
Cenotes...What are they all about?
A Cenote is a water-filled sinkhole that naturally occurs in limestone rock when an underground cave collapses in on itself exposing the groundwater underneath. They were not only sacred to the Mayans, but also their only source of fresh water. There are over 6,000 in the Yucatan Peninsula...so there are plenty of options for exploring. Centoes are great for swimming and snorkeling...and of course Insta-worthy photos!
The most popular cenotes include Grand Cenote, Cenote Carwash, and Cenote Zacil Ha. However, the highways are scattered with signs to cenotes, so feel free to pick an off-the-beaten-path cenote for exploring. You can also combine a cenote or two with a visit to one of the Mayan ruins in a day trip. As with any travel plans in 2020, be sure to check for COVID updates, as some of the ruins and cenotes may be closed.
We highly recommend renting a bike to explore Tulum while feeling like a local. You can rent bikes basically anywhere in Tulum or at your hotel and explore the main area. You can even check out Casa Malca. Once a property of Pablo Escobar and since has been bought by an artist and turned into an artsy boutique hotel. You can also visit the famous Ven a la Luz. The name of this 32-foot statue means, "Come into the light" and was constructed by Daniel Popper as part of an arts and culture festival in 2018.
"The piece symbolizes our deep connection with Nature and ourselves." - Daniel Popper
If you are on the beaches during the Summer months, you can often spot a giant mother turtle coming to lay her eggs on shore. If you are in the same area in late September or October, you might even be lucky enough to watch the eggs hatching!
You may notice small sectioned-off circular plots on the beach where the eggs are laid. There’s a big push for turtle conservation in Mexico, so they work really hard to protect them. Do some research to see if you can find a local turtle conservation and go help them release their baby turtles into the ocean.
The mosquitos here are bad. Bring plenty of bug spray so you don’t have to buy it while you’re there. Same goes for sunscreen.
COVID PRECAUTIONS
Clay and Summer both agreed that there were actually more safety precautions being used to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 at the Cancun airport compared to airports in the US. “Every person went through a full body temperature scan as they walked through the airport. Every employee had on face shields, masks, and gloves. They required all passengers to wear masks while in the airport. Our driver even sprayed down the seats before we got in his vehicle and he wore his mask the entire ride. All areas of hospitality in Tulum followed suit and wore face shields and masks our entire trip. We had our temperatures taken at every restaurant before being allowed to dine. I will say that the hotels did not require their guests to wear their masks while in the resorts. They were only operating at 30% which meant we were able to keep a safe social distance at all times with other hotel guests, plus all of the staff had masks and face shields on, so there was never any point where we felt unsafe.”
If you’re looking for an adventurous getaway with white sand beaches, ancient ruins, and beautiful swimming holes... go ahead and book your Tulum Adventure! Be sure to tag us while you’re #EverydayExploring, we want to hear all about it!
]]>As coronavirus regulations continue to constrict our travel plans, National Parks are the perfect place to escape and go exploring! The National Parks Service has been closely monitoring the changing public health status and following the CDC guidelines for disease prevention in public spaces. This includes following “a phased approach to reopen park areas." Currently about two thirds of the 419 units that make up the National Parks Service are open to the public although, some activities and services may be limited.
The National Parks Service is asking people to “Recreate Responsibly" by following social distancing guidelines to help slow the spread of COVID-19. Individual parks may have varying operation changes and other COVID related policies in effect based on local government regulations.
Before heading to a park be sure to check out it's current conditions, closures, and regulations.
Redwood National Park
This majestic forest located in Northern California it is now open to the public with a few restrictions in play. Group campgrounds, high public-use indoor facilities, and any special events/tours are still currently closed or cancelled. All trails are open and campground reservations must be made online. In California, face coverings are required in all indoor spaces and outdoor spaces when social distancing is not enforceable, so visitors might be required to wear a mask in the visitor’s center or when interacting with others. Right now, travel is still permitted to California without any further restrictions.
Grand Canyon National Park
The state even nicknamed itself after this canyon. The Grand Canyon spans over one million acres and on average is one mile deep. This park is currently experiencing changes due to COVID-19. Desert View and the East Entrance is closed. You must enter and exit the park through the South Rim entrance which is open to visitors. North Rim campground still currently closed although the North Rim Lodge is open to overnight guests. The free shuttle service is currently not operating. The park ranger interpretive programs and south rim shuttles are also suspended until further notice. Currently, there are no other travel restrictions for anyone visiting Arizona that would interfere with park visitation. Plan your visit to the Grand Canyon and check on lodging and campground closures before packing your bags.
Guadalupe Mountains National Park
The Guadalupe Mountains National Park is home to the highest peak in Texas, Guadalupe Peak, and a massive limestone formation known as El Capitan. This park also features over 50 miles of trails for hiking in rough and rocky terrain. Unfortunately, not all of those trails are open to the public right now. As of late June, the trails that are open include Devil’s Hall Trail, Guadalupe Trail, Smith Springs Trail, and Frijnole Ranch Area. Along with all other national parks, the Parks staff continues to monitor and adapt to changing health conditions. Park staff at Guadalupe Mountains National Park enforce guidelines set by the CDC in regard to social distancing and mask requirements. There are currently no other travel restrictions on the state of Texas.
Everglades National Park
The Everglades National Park is the “largest subtropical wilderness in the United States” and is located in Florida. There is never a dull moment in this park with fishing, boating, hiking, and the many different tours offered at this park. The Everglades entered its phased reopening strategy in early June. This phase allowed for commercial operations to reopen in the parks. Guided tours were allowed to resume with reduced capacities adhering to CDC guidelines. The park also reopened Shark Valley and Gulf Coast visitor centers although the buildings remained closed. The park recommends and enforces the same guidelines and rules set by the CDC in every National Park. There are no current travel bans or quarantines to Florida.

As the COVID-19 pandemic fueled record-breaking online sales, shoppers flocked to brand sites. And in this past second-quarter period, high-end flip-flop brand Hari Mari found itself atop a list of the most embraced direct-to-consumer sites in the market.
Founded by husband-and-wife team Jeremy and Lila Stewart in 2012, Hari Mari, which is derived from the Indonesian words for “sun” and “sea,” is a brand with a purpose. The company donates 1 percent of sales to support children who are battling pediatric cancer under its Flops Fighting Cancer program.
Here, the Stewarts share their vision and the origin of the company, which set out to “make a sandal that would last and not bust or break during the first summer of wear, but also focusing on comfort and color.”
WWD: What was the impetus behind launching the company?
Jeremy and Lila Stewart: We’d been living abroad in Indonesia for three years, so upon moving back in 2012, we went shopping to buy a new pair and weren’t impressed. The pairs we had while abroad had broken, plus, we’d been wearing the same brand for nearly a decade and wanted something new. Jeremy wanted something with an elevated look, a nicer flip flop but something with a pop of color. I wanted a leather flip flop that didn’t destroy my feet to break in and looking at the flip flop assortment offered, none of that existed at that time. It was the same sea of black and brown. The same flip flops that were hanging on the walls when we left in 2007 were the same flip flops hanging on the walls when we returned in 2010 and to sum it up — nothing new or fresh was being offered and it was a stagnant category. So, that’s when our wheels began turning, and after two years of R&D, we decided to launch Hari Mari, creating a new and improved flip flop focusing on color, out of the box comfort, and only using premium durable materials.
WWD: How would you describe the target customer? What do they expect in regard to quality and style?
J.S. & L.S.: Hari Mari’s product assortment has something to offer all ages and backgrounds, but we’d say our target customer is an adventure-seeker at heart, or what we like to call an “Everyday Explorer.” Those who have a thirst for travel, just like us, seem to gravitate toward and resonate well with the brand and we’re constantly inspired by the places our customers take their Hari Maris. Our customers can always expect comfortable craftsmanship, minimal, if any, break-in periods, and a sandal made with the best materials. It’s been incredibly exciting to see publications such as Vogue, O, the Oprah Magazine, Cosmopolitan, Men’s Journal and Outside Magazine, to name a few, include the brand in their “best looking” flip-flop round-ups over the years, which speaks to what our customers can expect from us for the style, look, and feel of the product.
WWD: How would you describe the brand attributes?
J.S. & L.S.: Hari Mari is known for breaking the mold of black and brown flops. We received a patent on our MemoryFoamToe™ piece last year, and by embodying a creative approach to this category, we’ve been able to infuse new colors, material stories, comfort and innovation into our products every season. Hari Mari was built on innovation, which is how we’ve approached decisions from marketing the brand to the idea of beginning the brand in Texas. Hari Mari is unique, fashion-forward but most of all, philanthropic. A large piece of our brand DNA is our Flops Fighting Cancer initiative, which is something near and dear to our entire team.
WWD: The product offerings have evolved and expanded since you first launched. How do you see it evolving in the future?
J.S. & L.S.: We have definitely grown our footwear offering from our initial launch. Men’s closed-toe was introduced in FA19 and has provided a nice way to engage with our customers in the sandal off-season. The response was incredibly positive, so we’re continuing to push the envelope here by broadening our men’s closed-toe assortment. As such, we’re launching a few new men’s boot styles in late September. On the ladies’ side, we’ve spent a few years developing more feminine styles, both in silhouettes and seasonal colors, that have really resonated with our customers. This past summer, we launched our first women’s slide and it sold out within two months. It was exciting to see that positive response right out of the gates, and plans are in play to launch shoes for women in spring 2021. Last, but certainly not least, our kids business has been growing year-over-year, providing us with a great opportunity to expand as a brand. Selling kids products wasn’t in our original business plan, so developing this side of our business, with our Flops Fighting Cancer initiative, is special for us. From inception, we have positioned Hari Mari as a lifestyle brand, which has enabled us to extend our reach well beyond footwear. Exciting times are on the horizon.

Southwest Airlines has increased their cleaning measures to use hospital-grade disinfectant on surfaces throughout the entire cabin of the plane. Southwest planes are equipped with HEPA or High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters that filter out 99.97% airborne particles and in-flight air circulation system that result in a complete exchange of cabin air every 2-3 minutes with outside air. Every month the planes are sprayed with an antimicrobial treatment on all surfaces. Southwest is limiting the amount of passengers on board to ensure the middle seat is empty through Halloween and limiting the boarding groups to 10 people. All passengers and crew members are required to wear a face covering during their travel. Check out their full Southwest Promise.
American airlines has also increased the use of an EPA-approved and hospital grade disinfectant and focuses on deep cleaning the high-touch and public areas. Their flights are equipped with HEPA filters that refresh the air every 2-4 minutes. They’ve added hand sanitizer in key locations and lounges and plexiglass shields at services desks. They’ve added touchless check in kiosks for select travelers. All travelers and crew are required to wear a face covering. Check out their full Clean Commitment.
Delta Airlines has partnered with Lysol to help create their clean experience and they’ve published their cleaning list. They are committed to continuous cleaning and spraying in cabin and in boarding areas. The planes are also equipped with the hospital grade HEPA filters that extract air particles and filter with outside air. The middle seats are blocked through September 30th and they’re committed to boarding back to front to help reduce the time you pass by other passengers. They are also making sure that in light of less passengers on board, they're monitoring high demand routes to ensure they are upsizing aircrafts or adding more flights. Check out their Delta CareStandard.
United Airlines has implemented temperature checks for flight crew and employees prior to all flights. They’re encouraging the use of their app for contactless travel assistance. At their gates you’ll find hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes and you can self-scan your boarding pass. Fewer passengers can board at a time, planes are boarded back to front, and all passengers and crew are required to wear a face mask. The planes are also equipped with state-of-the-art HEPA filtering systems for circulation and particle removal and they’ve partnered with Clorox and the Cleveland Clinic to create their sanitation protocols. Flight attendants are helping passengers de-plane five rows at a time to help reduce crowding. Learn more about their CleanPlus program
Many airlines are offering great deals and loyalty program perks if you're in the market for a lane ticket.
Airports and airlines are working hard to implement procedures to keep you safe during travel. Social distancing is taken seriously, masks are suggested and/or mandated, and new cleaning measures are being executed. Even with all of the precautions, you may not be ready to go #EverydayExploring the air...and that’s okay! Road trips require no air time at all.
So, if you are ready to fly or you’re ready to road trip...the only question is Where to Next?

Before Hari Mari, Founders Jeremy & Lila worked on projects & with organizations related to children's causes. When they started Hari Mari, they knew they wanted to help children and were quickly drawn to pediatric cancer - the single most fatal disease among American children, more fatal than all other childhood diseases combined.
Hari Mari wanted to help, and Flops Fighting Cancer was born. We started donating a percentage of sales for Flops Fighting Cancer from our very first flip flop purchase in 2012 to help pay for medical treatments and surgeries for kids battling cancer.
Along the way, we've also held auctions, fundraising events, and our personal favorite... Flop Drops!
This Summer's Flop Drop was a bit different than those in the past. Due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, our team was unable to interact with any of the children or healthcare heroes at Cook Children's Hospital. In fact, we didn't even get through the doors of the hospital. But, this didn't stop us! We still boxed up over 200 pairs of flip flops and gave them to the team at Cook Children's Health Foundation.
"At this point we have distributed about 115 pairs! We distributed the pairs two ways. First, at our Camper Box pick up. Our Oncology patients that normally attend Camp Sanguinity, drove through and picked up camper boxes to participate along with our Happy Camper At Home activities. This program brought camp to our patients in a virtual format. We also distributed the flip flops to our Hematology/Oncology floor, infusion and clinic areas." -Cook Children's Health Foundation Representative
Flops Fighting Cancer helps children like sweet John, here. He's only two-years-old, but fighting Cancer like a big boy! Our hearts go out to these strong kids fighting for their lives everyday.

After all the quarantining, working from home, and social distancing, we are all yearning for those carefree sunny days that we remember from summers past. Most beaches, lakes, and pools are opening back up in some capacity and you are probably finding yourself in need of flops that are ideal for aqua-adventures! While your Hari Mari flip flops are perfect for #EverydayExploring, there are certain styles designed specifically for water activities!
]]>After all the quarantining, working from home, and social distancing, we are all yearning for those carefree sunny days that we remember from summers past. Most beaches, lakes, and pools are opening back up in some capacity and you are probably finding yourself in need of flops that are ideal for aqua-adventures! While your Hari Mari flip flops are perfect for #EverydayExploring, there are certain styles designed specifically for water activities!
The Dunes are available for men, women, and kids! If you spend your summers on a boat or in the pool this style is meant for you. The siping in the footbeds channel the water out of the flip flop to keep your feet dry and squeak-free! Experience comfort all day with our MemoryFoamToe™ Post and Memory foam lined straps. Lost a flop overboard? No worries they float! Not to mention, the soles of these shoes are non-marking, meaning they won’t cause any damage to your boat.
Specifically for the guys, the Brazos & Brazos LX are a staple to any Summer closet. The Brazos LX are made with aqua-friendly, soft-squeeze foam and water-resistant full-grain leather straps with memory foam lining and also float! The footbed siping channels away water & grips feet and they're boat safe!
Similar to the Dunes, the Meadows Asana for women and Piers Crew for men are completely water-friendly made from EVA foam and vegan leather straps. The “Rise Up” molded outsole reduces slipping on wet and slick surfaces. Of course, these have our MemoryFoamToe™ Post and Memory foam lined straps! Pick a vibrant color flop perfect to match your suit or trunks!
Two styles that may not appear to be water-friendly at first, Men’s Pier and Women’s Meadows. Both styles are made with water-resistant Nubuck leather, which perfectly combine style, comfort, and summer activities! While we don’t recommend soaking these bad boys in the ocean, the leather can handle a normal amount of water exposure without compromising. The meadows have a slightly slimmer silhouette for a feminine touch and neither would be a Hari Mari flop without the MemoryFoamToe™ Post!
Splash into summer with the trendiest and comfiest flops out there that will make you feel like you deserve to dive right in.
